Kunjip Tofu in Mountain View is a fantastic spot for authentic and comforting Korean cuisine. Their soondubu (soft tofu stew) is rich, flavorful, and served bubbling hot, with just the right level of spice. The star of the night is grill Wagu which is a bit pricey, however, worth every penny! The banchan are individually served and plentiful, adding a great variety to the meal. The service is fast and friendly, ensuring that everything arrives promptly and piping hot. The restaurant has a warm, modern vibe, making it the perfect place to enjoy a hearty, satisfying meal.
Unlimited banchan, yes please! My coworkers and I arrived at noon for lunch on a Tuesday and there was no wait. Unfortunately they didn't have the kimbaps during lunch so we ordered a seafood pancake and then six wagyu galbi-- yes, 6, because my coworker said it's THAT GOOD. Each set came with rice, soup, banchan, and the most buttery lettuce to wrap with. They even served us a complimentary snow crap tempura which had the best dipping sauces. The service and food did not disappoint. They indeed come around throughout the meal to refill side dishes and even the lettuce! Can't wait to come back to try their tofu soup and kimbap!
Wagyu in soft tofu soup seems a bit decadent and over doing it but it's absolutely delicious and completely worth the experience. We also ordered the wagyu bulgogi which turned out to be a tad bit too sweet for our tastes. Most of the banchan are decent as well and the service was top notch. The vibe inside is pretty nice. They have plenty of waiting space outside if the weather is pleasant. And as an added bonus, you can add yourself to the Yelp wait list ahead of time if you don't want to show up and wait.
Service: attentive 5/5 Ambiance: casual or upscale date night Umlimited banchans except abalone For the food, you really can't go wrong anything you order. You can taste the quality in every dish, but here are my favorites: Chilean Seabass Twigim ($22) - I love anything wrapped in their gamtae batter, super light and crispy and the seabass was tender! Mixed Tofu Soup ($27)- Has A5 wagyu brisket, scallops, octopus, snow crab, and shrimp. Super flavorful and I love when you ask for spicy, it is actually spicy! Wagyu Galbi ($58)- So tender!! Comes with mushrooms, green onions, garlic, and lettuce. Eat with rice or make lettuce wraps! Do keep in mind that one entree per guest is required!
If you're looking for a fancy, elevated Korean experience, Kunjip Tofu is the one for you. You'll be amazed at the simple yet elegant decor when you walk in, along with their metal silverware, plates, and bowls. I came here on a weekday night around 6:30 pm with a party of 5. There was no wait at that time, but when we left, there were a few parties waiting for a table, so I'd suggest coming earlier if possible. Each person MUST order an entree. This is because each set of banchan comes out with an entree. Ordering multiple appetizers will not count towards the entree count. The banchan that they bring out is quite good and includes seafood pancake and abalone. The banchan is refillable with the exception of the abalone, and they are quite attentive with helping you refill your side dishes. We decided to share our entrees family style, which they helped us out by providing separate bowls and plates. We tried the following: - Wagyu Yookhweh Bibimbap (4/5): Pretty solid bibimbap option. Comes with seaweed soup. $35 - Mixed Tofu Soup (4.5/5): This really does come with a variety of seafood/meat! Not really an ideal entree to share amongst a group since there's different proteins in the soup, but pretty good option if you were having it individually. $27 - Wagyu Seolleongtang (3.5/5): They let you salt this on your own. It's not bad but there is definitely.. more meat than soup. Some may favor that but it definitely made it hard to share this family style as well. $34 - Spicy Galbi Jjim (4/5): Great flavor but small portion size for $46. - Grilled Mackerel (4/5): Grilled nicely. The sauce paired nicely with it as well. $38 At the end of the meal, they give you a small piece of dessert. Overall, the ambiance and service at Kunjip was great. However, the food is pricey and the portions are small. Expect to spend $50-$100 per person here
Upscale Korean place with fancy twists on many old school Korean classics and favorites. I've tried the bulgogi, the wagyu ox bone soup, the spicy tofu stews and more here. Everything has been very good -- not mind blowingly good -- but easily hold their own against any other Korean restaurant that I've been to. Their side dishes are also elevated compared to your average Korean place. One of the side dishes is a whole poached abalone and this is the only side dish for which there are no refills. But the rest of the side dishes don't disappoint either! There is steamed shrimp in egg custard, fresh kimchi and more. All of the utensils are cast from some solid metal which is heavy and feels premium in the hand. I would recommend taking that special someone here when you are feeling a bit fancy and don't want to cook dinner!
I heard from friends when they first opened that it was expensive and you leave hungry. They listened and reduced the price while providing more food. We ordered the following - sea bass appetizer 5/5 - seafood tofu 5/5 lots of crab, shrimp, scallops - wagyu seollantang 4/5 lots of beef but soup isn't as rich The environment is very high end, chic, and modern. They don't have tables for large groups. Maybe 8 at most the most. Service is excellent. Waitress was super friendly and attentive. They keep coming to check if we have enough side dishes.
The restaurant is beautiful! I'm obsessed with the neutral decor, greenery, lighting, gold dishware, everything! It's a perfect spot for date nights, with friends, or special occasions. A few things to note: There is a requirement of one entree per person, and the portions are designed as such. Appetizers can be shared, but they're on the smaller side so best for groups of 4 or fewer, in my opinion. Each person receives their own tray with rice and banchan, which are refillable except for the abalone. Appetizers (*dishes I'd recommend and order again): Seabass Twigim* (5/5): My favorite appetizer! It's a Korean-style seabass tempura. Super crispy and tender. A must try! Snow Crab Twigim (3/5): A little underwhelming, the light crispy shell was nice and the black garlic aioli was a good dip but other than that, not much flavor. Wagyu Yookhweh (4/5): Served with a fluffy rice cracker you break and mix in. The wagyu itself was really good, but it leaned very sweet which I don't prefer. Seafood Pancake* (5/5): I don't usually like seafood pancakes, but this one won me over! Light, crispy, and perfectly balanced without too much batter. Entrees - All 5/5 and would recommend! Comes with a soup and your choice of white or purple rice. The purple rice was so good! Mixed Tofu Soup - Very flavorful and spicy (we asked for spicy and it delivered). Generous portions of seafood including scallops, shrimps, mussels and wagyu. Grilled Sea Bass - Similar in flavor to the Seabass Twigim, which I loved. Came with wasabi!! Galbi Jjim - On the sweeter side again but the meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. Wagyu Galbi - Served with lettuce for DIY wraps. The quality of the meat was A+! Customer service was excellent. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us great recommendations. The other staff were very attentive as well, helping us arrange the entrees in the middle of the table since our group was sharing everything. Kunjip Tofu is on the higher end of Korean restaurants, so you can expect to splurge a little, especially with the wagyu and fish dishes. However, the quality, flavors, and overall experience were worth it. I'll definitely be returning!
I had a good experience here tonight, we ordered seafood pancakes, kalbe, tofu soup and they all tasted good.
The restaurant ambiance is warm and elegant . Obviously it is more upscale dining environment that we, group of four all enjoy it . Good quality of food , dedicate side dish , classic tableware. The most impressive is our server --Hunter who is so caring & observant that he noticed the box doesn't go well with the lid when we pack leftover soup. We was trying to fix it but he saw it and brought the new box for us without asking . Thank you , Hunter ! We will visit again .
